Little Escape Artist
By: Faith Academy 11th and 12th graders and Cynthia Butler (Written in 2025)
Outlaw in a crib, chillin’ in basket,
Rockin’ down the river, evading the casket,
Just tryin’ to keep a low profile,
Little escape artist floating down the Nile.
Tiny but mighty, keep on rollin’
Watching out for Pharaoh’s men patrolling,
Steering clear of the crocodiles,
Little escape artist floating down the Nile.
Chorus:
This is a leader’s origin story.
This is a fortunate son.
God’s plan written in glory;
Baby on the run!
Hanging out with the nematodes,
Staying away from the undertows,
Avoiding a piranha with a wicked smile,
Little escape artist floating down the Nile.
Helpless refuge, fleeing from
The evil king’s decree, being chased by
Soldiers who are, oh, so vile.
Little escape artist floating down the Nile.
Free Bro
By Faith Academy 10th graders and Cynthia Butler (Written in 2025)
Aaron: I don’t mean to be disrespectful,
But let us go so we can hold a festival.
Pharaoh: I wont let you have a party
‘Cause I’m the Pharaoh, and I’m stone cold hardy.
Aaron: Free bro’; he ain’t done nothing!
Pharaoh: I’ll make ‘em work more, and I ain’t bluffing
Aaron: Let me and my homies take a trip.
Pharaoh: Back off and don’t give me no lip!
That would be an abomination.
I’m not going to let you take a vacation.
Slave: Work in the day, fret in the night
Can someone else take this fight
Kept in the shadows, longing for light
Someone has to make it right
Pharaoh: Remember bro, back in the day
When we used to run and play.
Why don’t we hang out no mo’?
Moses: ‘Cause you won’t let my people go!
Pharaoh: You came back but you don’t care.
Moses: The way you treat us isn’t fair!
Pharaoh: That’s nunna yo bizness, they’ve gotta stay!
Moses: You’ll regret this by the end of the day
God’s gonna send 10 plagues your way;
You better run; you better pray!
Slave: Straw on the road side, straw in the ditch;
We all gathered straw but we never got rich.
These days are so long, my faith is cut short.
We cried out for help but we’re only ignored.
Moses (to the people):
Listen people, God’s got a plan.
He’ll lead us to the promised land.
By the hand of God you’ll be redeemed.
He’ll guide you to the place of your dreams!
Gnats and Frogs
By Faith Academy 8th and 9th graders and Cynthia Butler (Written in 2025)
Note: We took artistic license in this song. In reality, the frogs were gone before the gnats arrived.
(See Exodus 8.)
Oh, no they’re in my bed! Oh, no they’re on my chair!
Oh, no they’re on my bread! Oh, no, they’re everywhere
It’s raining gnats and frogs; it’s raining gnats and frogs out there!
Buzzing in my ears, croaking in the night,
Reviving all my fears, what a dreadful sight,
They’re knocking on my door, these uninvited guests.
They’re sliming up my floor. Quit it little pests!
Oh, no they’re on my rug! Oh, no they’re on my stairs!
They’re in my coffee mug, and there’s not enough to share.
It’s raining gnats and frogs, it’s raining gnats and frogs out there!
They’re opening my cans. They’re eating all my pears
They’re banging on my pans. It’s more than I can bear!
They’re crawling on the wall. I’ve got to get away!
I feel my faith will fall. This could be Judgment Day!
Oh, no they’re in my bed! Oh, no they’re on my chair!
Oh, no they’re on my bread! Oh, no, they’re everywhere
It’s raining gnats and frogs, it’s raining gnats and frogs out there!
Free Bird Exodus
A parody of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird”
Rewritten by the 11th-12th grade class and Cynthia Butler
If I leave here at midnight,
Would you still remember me? For I must be traveling on, now; There’s a promised land where I’ve got to be.
I won’t stay here in Egypt, Cause these conditions are a pain
I’m as free as a bird now,
And this bird you cannot chain.
And this bird you cannot chain.
And this bird you cannot chain.
Lord knows, I’m unchained.
